New York Through Art and Space: A Visit to MoMA and the Guggenheim

Between project meetings in New York, Claire Dominic’s Buro stepped into two of the city’s most influential cultural spaces—the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Beyond seeing celebrated works of art, these visits became an opportunity to reflect on scale, materiality, movement, and the relationship between art and the spaces that hold it.

Whenever we travel for projects, we try to visit museums, even when the schedule is tight. During our recent trip to New York, we made time to step away from meetings and experience the city through its art and cultural spaces.

At the Museum of Modern Art, standing before works such as The Persistence of Memory, The False Mirror, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, and Monet’s Water Lilies reminded us how differently art is experienced in person.

Seeing Art Beyond the Image

Images can introduce us to an artwork, but they cannot fully communicate its physical presence. At MoMA, scale, texture, colour and light become part of the experience—shifting our perception and quietly influencing the way we think about materials, composition and atmosphere.

The Museum as Part of the Experience

At the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the relationship between art and its surroundings becomes even more pronounced. The building is not simply a backdrop for the collection—it actively shapes the way each artwork is encountered.

Its continuous form guides visitors naturally from one work to another, allowing changing perspectives, light and movement to become part of the exhibition itself.

Design Through Every Sense

For Claire Dominic’s Buro, experiences like these reinforce an important idea: meaningful spaces are understood through more than what we see.

Movement, proportion, texture, material, light and atmosphere work together to shape how a place feels. The Guggenheim demonstrates this beautifully, creating a
continuous dialogue between art and space.

Visits like these are not about directly translating an artwork or museum into an interior. Their influence is quieter.

They sharpen our awareness of how materials interact, how scale changes perception, how light creates atmosphere, and how movement can turn a sequence of spaces into an experience.

For Claire Dominic’s Buro, travelling for a project is therefore also an opportunity to observe and absorb. From MoMA’s extraordinary collection to the Guggenheim’s continuous dialogue between art and space, New York offered another reminder that meaningful design begins with paying attention to how we experience the world around us.
